The 14th Malaria Research Network of Ethiopia Symposium: Curb the Surge and Eliminate Malaria

The Ethiopian Malaria Research Network hosted the 14th annual Malaria Research Network of Ethiopia Symposium, took place from May 9-10, 2024 in the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia. This year’s symposium is held in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), and the U.S. President’s Malaria Surveillance for Malaria Elimination (S4ME) activity, PATH, and Jigjiga University. The symposium serves as a critical platform for researchers, policymakers, healthcare workers, and community representatives from across Ethiopia. The theme, “Curb the Surge and Eliminate Malaria,” reflects the collective commitment to tackling this persistent challenge.

The symposium features had diverse program, including:

  • Keynote speeches from renowned experts in malaria research and control
  • Plenary sessions led by leading authorities
  • Panel discussions fostering dialogue on critical issues
  • Poster presentations showcasing ongoing research
  • Workshops providing practical skills development

    With over 110-150 participants attended the symposium, the symposium fosters an exchange of knowledge and experience. Researchers, program managers, healthcare professionals, and implementing partners will all contribute their unique perspective.

Over 24 research papers were presented, covering a broad spectrum of topics in malaria control, including epidemiology, vector control, treatment and surveillance.
The symposium provides a platform to share the latest findings, innovations, and best practices in malaria prevention and control. Attendees gained insights into ongoing research projects, successful interventions, and the challenges and opportunities faced in eliminating malaria from Ethiopia

Charting a Course for the future

Panel discussion was entitled “Connecting the DOTS: How Does the History of Malaria Shape Our Efforts Today?” This session brought together policymakers, healthcare workers, researchers, and community representatives to discuss the past, present, and future of malaria control in Ethiopia.
