National Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and other Lung diseases (TBLLD) Program Annual Performance Review

The National TBLLD Program concluded its annual performance review on September 20, 2024, in Bishoftu. Participants included representatives from the National TBLLD program staff, agencies, regional health bureaus, EPSS hubs, regional laboratories, uniformed health services, and partners. The review focused on the program’s performance in tuberculosis, drug-resistant TB, and leprosy for the 2023/2024 fiscal year. Key highlights of the presentation included:

  • Treatment coverage has increased from 60% in 2017 to 91.5% in 2024.
  • A total of 148,100 TB cases were notified in 2024, with the highest rates among individuals aged 25-34.
  • Community referrals accounted for 24% of notified TB cases, while PPM contributed 18%.
  • TB incidence has declined from 177 per 100,000 population in 2016 to 146 in 2023.
  • The treatment success rate has risen from 87% in 2019 to 90% in 2024.
  • DST coverage has expanded from 23% in 2020 to 71% in 2024.
  • 806 DR-TB cases were detected and enrolled in second-line drug treatment.
  • 88.6% of TB patients were tested for HIV, and 90.5% of TB/HIV co-infected cases were enrolled in ART treatment.

The program also acknowledged challenges such as data quality issues, limited screening tools, funding gaps, insufficient intersectoral engagement, and commodity distribution difficulties.

All 14 regions, agencies, and partners presented their annual performance, shared best practices, and participated in in-depth discussions during the review.
