CCM/E STATEMENT WORLD AIDS DAY

Global Motto: “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response” 38th World AIDS Day 2025

National Theme: “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!”

Today, Ethiopia joins the world in celebrating World AIDS Day

Since its inception in 1988, this day has served as a powerful call to action, uniting us in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This year, the global motto, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” carries immense relevance for our nation. While Ethiopia has made commendable progress toward achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, the past year has presented significant challenges, primarily due to global financial constraints that threatened to derail essential services.

Ethiopia has made remarkable efforts to reduce HIV incidence and prevalence, with over 75% of people living with HIV receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) by the end of 2024. The national response has successfully brought down overall infection rates in many areas.  As the Country Coordinating Mechanism for Ethiopia (CCM/E), our primary mandate is to ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of all Global Fund grants. In 2025, this meant pivoting quickly to safeguard the lives of people living with and affected by HIV.

The CCM/E has focused on the following critical actions:

The CCM/E utilized its oversight function and advocacy platform to urgently prioritize the continuity of life-saving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and other essential commodities (like PrEP and testing kits) amidst supply chain risks.

We have intensified dialogue with the Government of Ethiopia to strengthen the national commitment to HIV financing. Securing and monitoring the utilization of domestic co-financing commitments is paramount to building a sustainable response, reducing dependency on external aid, and achieving national ownership.

The CCM/E continues to push for programs that directly tackle stigma and discrimination, focusing particularly on women, adolescent girls, and Key Populations (KPs) who face heightened vulnerability and service access barriers.

The CCM/E is not just overseeing grants; we are actively ensuring that the recent financial disruptions do not become humanitarian crises. We must seize this challenge to transform our response into one that is resilient, Ethiopian-owned, and fundamentally equitable.
